The Honorable Barbara Spyridon Pope is currently a member of the Board of Directors, Madison House Autism Foundation, dedicated to educating and housing special needs adults. The Foundation’s mission is to develop an adult special needs community, a purpose built prototype that combines the best practices of group homes and assisted living in a rural setting. In addition, Mrs. Pope is a member of the Board of Directors, Victory Housing, the Catholic Archdiocese nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable, quality assisted living for seniors.

Mrs. Pope was the former Assistant Secretary of State for Civil Rights, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Acting Chief of Staff for the Small Business Administration and President, The Pope Group, a management consulting firm; and Director of Special Needs Housing, Sunrise Assisted Living. She is the recipient of numerous state, federal and national awards, including: the national “Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award.” Mrs. Pope was the first “female” Assistant Secretary of the Navy in its 217 year history.

In her government career, Mrs. Pope was responsible for first downsizing of the “all volunteer force” in the post Cold War Era; leading the Department of the Navy in the aftermath of Tailhook; developing the first: international interagency responding to child abuse crisis; pinpoint assignment policy for military members with special needs dependents; the first regulations for the military school system for special needs education; the Pentagon Child Care Center; and for bringing the Department of State from the bottom of the government to the first in eliminating employee civil rights discrimination around the world.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Mrs. Pope is married to James (Jay) Pope and they have two adult children James and Kacey, their 27 year old autistic daughter.
