Chief Operating Officer/Vice President, Veteran, James Dunn, Michigan

Jim Dunn served as the Deputy Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) until December 2016. The MVAA, located within the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, is a separate agency that is responsible for the administration and operation of the Michigan Homes for Veterans, the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund, constituent service or referral and the state’s grant to chartered veteran’s service organizations and the Michigan Association of County Veterans Counselors. The Agency began operation on March 20, 2013, pursuant to an Executive Order signed by Governor Snyder.

Dunn was initially appointed by Governor Snyder to serve on the Michigan Veterans Facilities Board of Managers and as an extension of his service and work experience was asked to join the staff of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs as Chief of Staff. He was recently appointed by Governor Snyder as the Chairman of the Veterans Memorial Park Commission. Prior to joining the Department, Dunn served as the President of James Dunn, PLLC, a law firm specializing in providing legal counsel to Michigan corporations engaged in a variety of transportation related activities. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

Dunn previously served as an Army officer earning the rank of Captain. He served two tours in Vietnam as a Forward Observer with the 1/16 Infantry Rangers. He was wounded on his second tour while serving as an Aerial Observer with the Big Red One. He also served an overseas tour with the 2nd Infantry Division, along the DMZ in Korea. He holds a dual MOS and has commanded both an infantry company and an artillery battery, among other military duties.

Dunn’s service awards include four distinguished flying Crosses; a Bronze Star medal; 32 awards of the Air Medal; three awards of the Air Medal with Valor; a Purple Heart; two awards of the Army Accommodation Medal; the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Commendation Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and, the Good Conduct Medal. As a civilian, Dunn received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Volunteers of America; a Senate Tribute on Memorial Day; inducted into the Lansing Community College Hall of Honor for Veterans; and, inducted into the Red Cross Tiffany Circle.

Dunn and his wife, Nan (who is also an attorney), live in East Lansing and are proud parents of four boys.
