The American Legion Department of Michigan

Gary Tanner is a United States Army Veteran who earned his wartime eligibility in the American Legion during the Grenada and Lebanon era. Gary continues to serve his country and his fellow Veterans as a sub-committee member of the American Legion National Security Commission and as the Reconnect Committee Chairman for the American Legion Department of Michigan. Gary works tirelessly to adapt to the ever-changing needs of today’s military families and our Veterans. Through his dedication and determination to provide the best possible assistance to our military families and his fellow Veterans, Gary founded and oversees successful programs such as the Michigan Patriot Endowment Fund, The Sesame Workshop sponsored Elmobility Room, and the Michigan Wounded and Returning Warrior Program. Gary ensures that his Reconnect Committee is represented at all Michigan National Guard Pre-, Mid-, and Post-Deployment workshops. His ability to network and form partnerships with local businesses and organizations has allowed him to provide timely, relevant, life impacting assistance and support to Michigan’s military families and our Veterans. As volunteers, 100% of all donations received go directly to the families we assist.

  • Recipient of the American Legion Department of Michigan’s 2016 Good Guy Award
  • Selected as the American Legion Department of Michigan’s 2013 Legionnaire of the Year
  • Selected as the 2012 Michigan Veteran of the Year
  • Inducted as an Honorary Life Member of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans of Canada, United States Unit, (ANAVICUS) in 2012.
  • Recipient of the Michigan National Guard’s Minute Man Award, (Outstanding Center of Influence Award for support provided to their soldiers and their families during deployments)
  • Selected as the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council’s 2008 Veteran of the Year
  • Recipient of the American Legion Department of Michigan’s Milton W.
  • Lobstein Award for Best District Public Relations Program
  • Recipient of the Joshua’s Trail Radio Program’s “Proud to be an American” Award
  • Recipient of the American Legion National Commander’s Square Knot Award for Scouting 
  • Recipient of the Boy Scouts of America’s William D. Boyce Award.
